What is Active Release Technique?

ART soft tissue management system is so different that it has been granted a medical patent. An ART provider is trained to palpate and treat more than 300 muscular and other soft tissue injuries and over 100 nerve entrapments, which often cause numbness and tingling.

Muscles were designed to move a certain direction, often gliding over the top of another muscle. When an injury occurs, scar tissue forms like a spider web, fusing the two muscles together in spots. This causes the tightness, numbness, tingling and pain you may feel after an injury, whether traumatic or repetitive. When your injured muscles try to move as they were intended, they can’t move smoothly. And the friction caused by scar tissue causes inflammation and more scar tissue.

Think for a minute about two pieces of Scotch tape. When the two smooth sides are placed together, they easily glide over one another. However, when the sticky sides meet, the smooth motion stops—much like muscles entangled in scar tissue do.

So what can ART effectively treat? A lot of injuries! A few are: carpal tunnel syndrome, golfer’s/tennis elbow, iliotibal band syndrome, plantar fasciitis, sciatica, shin splints, sports injuries, TMJ, whiplash, etc. The common thread in all of these ailments is that an injury has produced scar tissue, causing the muscles to stick together, or causing nerves to become entrapped.

Why is ART so successful? To effectively treat a soft-tissue dysfunction, the practitioner must be able to feel the adhesed tissues and restrictions. ART is unique in that ART practitioners are taught methods for
feeling the location and direction of all restrictions
feeling the breakdown of the adhesed tissues
feeling the change in the soft-tissue as the nerves, tendons, ligaments and muscles translate and move easily across each other.

ART practitioners also are trained to consider the body to be one complete, dynamic, functional unit. Therefore, they do not restrict their attention and treatment to just the area of complaint. Often times a nerve is entrapped away from the area of pain.

ART isn’t massage, myofascial release, random stretches or chiropractic care. It’s unique. It works. Try it!
